WRITER'S COMMENTS: I like to write songs that are a series of vignettes with a common tag line at the end (like Spray Job). In this case each person sets out to see someone (beautiful girl, of course) and has their own set of adventures along the way. One has to deal with rebel soldiers. One is a witness to an execution at Texas Huntsville Prison. Another has to take public transportation into a part of town where his skin color is too white for the cholos in his girlfriend's neighborhood. Another strolls merrily along solving his problems in his head but stops in a bar and ends up drunk instead. Musically, it is supposed to travel along, just as its characters do. A pretty complete work, I think..
On the way to see you tonight The rebels knocked the bridge out so I had to swim the river Walked around in wet clothes till they dried enough to see you And now it's all bad money
I had to go black market to exchange my currency On the way to see you tonight On the way to see you tonight
On the way to see you tonight I got mixed up in Huntsville as a witness execution The victims family tell me that they felt no disillusion But I felt cold and dead Tried to let your pretty thought seep back into my head On the way to see you tonight
And there's a bus that comes up from the south side and it's a short cab ride cross into the east side I look lily white out on 7th street I thought I heard them shouting through the mariachi beats is somone chasing me
On the way tonight On the way tonight
On the way to see you tonight I realized my life was based on instant satisfaction Made those resolutions only time alone can bring Lost those resolutions at the first neon distraction Made the wrong choices about almost everything
