WRITER'S COMMENTS: This song is about my true home town, Alton IL. A small town with a bizarre assortment of snuggly drunks, cocaine dealers, an abnormally high rate of young suicidals whose preferred method is hanging from the basement rafters, sexual octangles with the ususal suspects, and a feeling that we are all part of something that we can't quite put our finger on but unto each other we know what it is. The song sounds like it's to a girl, but it's really to a town. A weird town, and if you read this, you will probably meet someone from that town. It works like that..
I got same old dogs wanting to bite me The same old rednecks keep wanting to fight me The same old parties and they always invite me The same old puff that's always liked me
Now I face South and I bend over In my mouth I stay sober No one leaves until I say it's over I said please now can I come over
And I show up I know the rules of engagement
You're the one you're the one, burn me like the sun What's it cost to know you when you're just my type
You keep a gun in your car, a Lady Smith and Wesson Never learned your lesson and you're just my type
I got just enough to swing from the rafters Just enough to miss what I'm after
Just this side of getting even Just in time baby I'll be leaving
And I show up I know the rules And I show up I know the rules of engagement
I showed up at your at wedding, not just the reception, sweated in the front row and adjusted my tie You're just as precious as can be, never think of me, but everything about you is just my type
You say you know Chico Mendez, you hate the rubber business, you're the only witness and you're just my type You come off louder than a bomb, keep it at your mom's, everything about you is just my type
I show up I know the rules
I show up I know the rules
I show up I know the rules of engagement |
