Punchy may call Austin, Texas home, but their brand of roots
rock has more in common with Midwest legends like the Replacements - which is okay with me, but worth mentioning all the same. Muscular guitars form the basis of the Punchy sound, that and their unswerving ability to never stray too far from the pop form, so whatever sound they're going for, the hooks remain intact and the arrangements sharp. For the most part, it's a solid collection, with a couple of outstanding tracks thrown in to whip up some real excitement. The title track is an instant classic, with its references to concealed weapons and bloodthirsty rednecks, and "Graces" is a broken-down love song with a Tex-Mex feel and plenty of cracked emotional punch.
